How to Dual boot Windows OS and android x86 on pc

This post may be a little too long but it doesn't matter even if it has been old tips.
This How to install android x86 on pc, laptop or notebook with a dual boot with windows operating systems like windows xp, windows 7 or windows 8.

It is not difficult to do that and need to understand a little of what is called the android x86. Android x86 is an android operating system which is used for the OS installed on your computer, laptop or notebook or virtual box so that android can be used on PC.

And I recommend to install android to install it separately on different partitions with windows operating system partition, so if windows installed on the first partition in the partition or drive C then Android installed on the second partition or drive D. In this tutorial i use android x86 RC2 tx2500 ISO you can use any android x86 like android x86 4.2 jellybean, and the latest one android x86 4.3 jellybean.

Here to make a partition from Drive C in windows 7:

1. Open windows explorer
2. Right-click Computer and select Manage posts that will be out a new window as shown below.
manage disk windows 7

3. Click the Disk management of Storage. To get started create a partition from an existing partition as the partition is to be created from Drive C partition, right-click the mouse and select Shrink volume.

shrink volume disk
4. In the third option the input numbers or the size of the partition to be created as a new partition that will be created is the 2GB of the literature in 2048 and then click shrink.

5. Later will come the new partition unallocated, then right mouse click on the partition and select New Simple volume, click next, next and there will be income for the partition name and rename the desired fit and the next again until the finish button to completion.

Note: Actually, the first way is not recommended because if the windows when install grub android is not detected windows boot that have been installed on the computer there will be no choice or option entered in boot but still can boot to be returned to windows by manual settings on grub or use windows repair. Windows detected by grub can be seen at No. 9 on the first step.

Method 1. How to install android on pc or computer, a laptop dual boot with windows OS with grub on android:

1. Download android x86 here choose as you wish.

2. Burn to CD burning software of your choice to use eg. nero, iso master etc.. Or burn through usb flash disk using unetbootin or isotousb.

3. Create an empty partition will be installed android on a new partition of at least 1GB/2gb. It is recommended to format partition to FAT32 or EXT3 so we can access android root, if you using EXT3 on windows EXT3 format will not be read so use the application Explore2fs or ext2fsd to open EXT3 partitions in windows.

4. Restart the computer and boot first to the CD or usb flash can be seen on the step 2 at No. 4.

5. The first boot will look like this. To start the install select the last part it is installation.
This picture is from my second blog at http://sejenisinfo.blogspot.com on Indonesian language.

6. Select the partition you want to use, be careful don't wrong installation on partition because if wrong might actually be installed on the existing windows partition, lucky if at the time of install android on partition in is not format so the windows are still there. In the picture below installed on sda2 which means that in windows can be is Drive D:, to several partitions in windows sometimes different readings on the Linux partition with can sometimes be sda2 is Drive C or Drive E:.

choose partition android on laptop

7. On the next menu will be seen menu options to format or not like in the picture below, but the suggested format to fat32 or ext3 partition, so we can be able access android root.

partition on android x86

8. Next will be asked to install grub, select yes to install grub on android x86. But there are differences in the method two could be seen under the second method. If windows booting not detected then booting into windows will disappear, when windows boots detected by android grub as seen at No. 9. Look on the method two using grub2win for different way to install grub.

install grub on android x86 on computer

9. Computers have been installed to the windows then the option of grub install windows will be detected as in the picture below and click yes.

10. Android-x86 will soon begin to install and soon there will be another option to determine the capacity of the partition image for application, adjusted to the needs defaults to 512 MB and can be added to 2 gigabytes for example by typing 2048 click enter on keyboard then wait until the installation process is complete.

Method 2. Install android dual boot with windows OS Boot with grub2win:

1. Download live CD android x86 android according to the needs like froyo, 2.3 (Gingerbread), Android 4.0 ics (Ice cream sandwich), 4.2 (jellybean) here.

2. Burn Android x86 ISO to CD or USB flash drive, to burn it to cd can use nero or the other and to burn ISO to usb maker, unetbootin etc. ..

3. I'm here install android using usb flash disk, restart the computer and go into bios and select first boot to usb or by restarting the computer and click one of the following keys F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, or F12 according to the settings for the computer enter boot option to usb.

4. If you are booting to a live CD android x86 select the installation and follow the steps listed in android

5. For the partition choose is the newly created partition

6. Format to FAT32 or EXT3 for android can be access to root, if the partition with ntfs format then we cannot access android root .
dual boot windows and android

7. Don't install grub skip for this choice Because the grub will be installed in the windows later. If you want install grub from android grub just choose yes and yes for windows detected there but if windows not detected by grub you can add manually later.

8. Then select yes to read write partition so that the partition will not be locked.
android for windows

9. Select Yes to save the data.img on the hard drive, can be adjusted to a maximum size of 2GB.

10. Once completed reboot or restart the computer and log into Windows.
11. Download grub2 for windows here. Extract grub2 for windows on drive C. Go to the folder and install grub2 in the folder install once installed grub2 grub.cfg will be created in folder grub2 open grub.cfg with notepad and add the boot menu android.
I use android-x86-4.0-RC2-tx2500.iso so here the grub for android android-x86-4.0-RC2-tx2500.iso and installed on sda2 or Drive D on partition two. Here the example grub setting for android x86 iso tx2500 4.0-RC2 if you choose grub setting on windows later and place on the bottom of the note.

### Android ###
menuentry "Android-x86 4.0-RC2" {
set root='(hd0,2)'
linux /android-4.0-RC2/kernel quiet root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=tx2500 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode SRC=/android-4.0-RC2 vga=788
initrd /android-4.0-RC2/initrd.img
}

menuentry "Android-x86 4.0-RC2 (Debug mode)" {

initrd /android-4.0-RC2/initrd.img
}
### END Android###

Every android x86 grub downloaded it will be different according to the android x86 ISO download

Note: The red texts replace with your android partition during installation, or as if android is installed in the partition third or Drive E :/ then replace (hd0, 2) with (hd0, 3), and if the partitions are only primary no logical drive so drive E as hd0,3 and if the partition or drive E is logical drive then Drive E is (hd0, 5) sorry if make wrong, replace the name eeepc with current android name that installed, can be viewed at the downloaded android ISO. And one more thing you could change the VGA = 788 (800x600) with a resolution corresponding to a computer or laptop in question, eg vga = 791 (1024x768) to view all modes VGA = ask, DPI = 16 can be replaced with DPI = 120 or DPI = 160 and there is a possibility without DPI can enter so if something happens ... do not have to use DPI = XX.

14. Save a notepad and restart the computer, if grub2 successfully installed then there are boot options menu when the computer is on, select boot to grub 2 boot menu and select android to choose the android OS.
15. Good luck.

      for grub 1

      title Windows\nBoot up Windows if installed
      errorcheck off
      find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /bootmgr
      chainloader /bootmgr
      find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /ntldr
      chainloader /ntldr
      find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /io.sys
      chainloader /io.sys
      errorcheck on

      For grub2 here the command :
      menuentry "Windows" {
      set root=(hd0,X)
      chainloader +1
      }

      Change set root=(hd0,X) to your partition windows.

      or use this
      menuentry "Windows 8 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)" --class windows --class os {
      insmod part_msdos
      insmod ntfs
      set root='(hd0,msdos1)'

    1. What android iso do you use ?

      if android x86 4.0 or ics you can use open manager there

      I use internet from LAN but you can try this (source https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-x86/9p6IRYbYP4c)
      I've merged the support of 3G USB modem dongle
      into froyo-x86 branch.

      Depends on your USB dongle, you may need
      to modify the property rild.libargs
      and system/core/rootdir/etc/ppp/peers/gprs
      to set the modem ports correctly.

      With the on property function of init.rc,
      now the pppd daemon will automatically
      start to establish the internet connection
      when 3G dongle is inserted.

      If you create a proper APN, a 3G activity icon
      will appear on the top-right corner of the status bar.
      (e.g. http://cwhuang.info/wpg2?g2_itemId=618)
      All internet apps will work correctly.
      You can add the APN of your carrier to the apns-conf.xml.

      Hopefully you enjoy the nice feature.

      3. You can try using android-x86-4.0-RC2-asus_laptop.iso and android-x86-4.0-RC2-eeepc.iso in http://www.android-x86.org/download
      4. rild.libargs is from system.prop

    5. yes you can install apps from usb :
      - Plug your USB onto ur computer
      - Run Open manager apps and klik sign "/" and Klik "mnt" folder and you will see the "USB" folder.

      You can't run su in terminal cause you install android on NTFS partition right ? so the android can't root

      To get acces root you must format the partition into FAT32 or EXT3 partition.

    1. If you installed using method 1 the grub setting is not in grub.cfg but it is menu.lst.
      Cause grub in method 1 is grub1 and in method 2 win2grub is grub2 the difference is grub1 = menu.lst and grub2 = grub.cfg

      Boot and Run in to windows and found menu.lst in your android partition in grub folder.

  24. Hi. My PC came programmed with Windows 7 and I want to use Android x86 (the 4.3 iso on their site works on my PC). I didn't want to have to keep plugging in the USB just to use Android x86, though, and I still need Windows 7 to run on my PC. After doing a Google search to dual boot the two, I came across your site.

    I attempted to dual boot Windows 7 and Android x86 (the 4.3 iso) using your tutorial. I followed the partition creation instructions and then chose to follow method 2 because of your note about method 1. After restarting my system at the end of the process, this is my result:

    1. After the Lenovo screen loads, Windows 7 boot up would always follow, but now after Lenovo screen loads, Windows 7 will not boot and I get Windows Boot Manager: 0xc000000f error screen.
    2. Android x86 did not boot either.

    I did not add nor take away anything from your instructions. I was tempted to go in another direction with your instructions, but I told myself, "In order to get results like his, I must follow his exact instructions." And, stuck to your game plan. Will you please be able to help me? Thanks kindly.

  34. Hello Zein,

    Thanks very much for posting this and following up.

    I really didn't want to bother you, but I've tried and tried and I'm stuck!

    I have installed 4.4 RC1 onto an SDcard installed in my girlfiend's Eeepc using method 2. I can boot it and it works. I have installed grub2win and tried to add the Android listing to the menu. I see listing in the menu, and I can select it, but it doesn't boot android it just bounces back to the grub menu. I see a window counting down from five which shows 'boot disc address is hd0.

    I copied and pasted your suggested code lines only modifying the name of the install and the HD address which appears to be (hd1,1) as follows:
    ### Android ###
    menuentry "android-4.4-RC1" {
    set root='(hd1,1)'
    linux /android-4.4-RC1/kernel quiet root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=tx2500 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode SRC=/android-4.4-RC1 vga=788
    initrd /android-4.4-RC1/initrd.img
    }

    menuentry "android-4.4-RC1 (Debug mode)" {
    set root='(hd1,1)'
    linux /android-4.4-RC1/kernel root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=tx2500 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode DEBUG=1 SRC=/android-4.4-RC1 vga=788
    initrd /android-4.4-RC1/initrd.img
    }
    ### END Android###

    but in grub2win menu configuration entries for android show partition address = Drive 1 Partition 1 only for the first view, as soon as I close grub2win and re-open (or restart it shows hd 0 partition 0.

    Does this not work with SD cards, or am I doing something wrong?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Also while I am here, any VGA number correspond to the 1024x600 native resolution of the Eeepc?

    Thanks,
    Tom.

    1. What you use to install android ? are you using sdcard in the same place with your android installation?
      1. For grub setting android 4.4 RC1 kitkat you can see here

      2. And install android 4.4 in virtual box you can see here
      http://logytips.blogspot.com/2014/03/install-android-kitkat-x86-in.html

      3. If you install android in sdcard try to format first with fat32 or ext3 if your format in ntfs your android cannot acces root. and while installation android don't format again in method 2 at no 6 cancel it.

      4. Change your grub to below

      ###Android KitKat###

    2. Hi, thanks so much for the reply. I was installing from a USB key onto the SDCARD. But I gave up! I have now installed it onto the E: partition (FAT32) of the primary hard drive. I have used grub on this partition and not grub2win. And the dual boot function works perfectly.

      But I have another question now! I the Eeepc has one physical drive; C:WINDOWS (NTFS 100Gb), D:STUFF(175Gb FAT32), E:ANDROID(FAT32 8Gb) I would like to mount D (sda3) as sdcard when android starts up so that I can access all of the files that I share with windows. I just don't know enough about linux to understand what I find online. I am a real beginner!

      But it is so frustrating because Android really seems to work well. If only we could access all the files we need then we can use it for real.

      If you can help that would be great - but remember I am like a baby at this so I need instructions that start from the very beginning!!

      Thanks again, and take care,
      Tom.

    3. 1. Try to use this apps :
      - Mount Manager
      - USB mount All
      - Stick mount

      2. If all apps above not work try to mount Manual
      - Open terminal and type "su" without quotes
      - Allow superuser acces
      - ls /dev/block/sda*
      - to see your fat32 partition type "fdisk -l /dev/block/sda" without quotes
      - mkdir /sdcard/disk1
      - mkdir /sdcard/disk2
      - i want to mount my sda3 partition so i type "busybox mount /dev/block/sda3 /sdcard/disk" without quotes
      - ls /sdcard/disk1 (if your partition mounted the files and folder will be shown) copy and paste your file/folder for example your file to be copy is File Android so type command below
      - cp /sdcard/disk1/File\ Android /sdcard/disk2
      - Open file manager and see bew folder disk2 is your file in another partition was copying
      - if copy file is done umount the disk type "busybox umount -t loop /dev/block/sda3 /sdcard/disk1" without quotes
      to type text command in android you must be the same texts with current texts and if the file texts with space so type sign \ in the right texts for example
      File Android so in terminal is File\ Android

      see the pictures below
      Screenshot android terminal

      Thanks so much for your help Zein.

      The apps didn't work. So used the code, and that did work. It enabled me to access the drive in console and to copy files to/from it. But what I really want is for that drive to mount as a virtual SDcard drive every time Android boots, so documents are accessible in all apps etc. I don't know if it's possible, but thanks you ever so much for all the tutorials and even the screengrabs which were really helpful in teaching me a little linux code.

    1. This problem caused due a burn software tool, your android iso file or your usb.

      one of tips below I think can resolve

      1. The first solution Reinstall or re burn your android iso file with unetbootin ...
      http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

      2. The solution Re download your android iso file
      3. The third solution Change your USB

      2. Or you can try install grub to your flashdisk in fat32 partition before you install grub to flashdisk make sure you backup your data cause the data will be formated, and then you can boot grub from flashdisk with android installed in harddisk with grub setting

    1. Use any bootable windows drive. If you have not deleted the previous installation of windows use the recovery option and open cmd type the following command 'bootrec.exe /fixmbr'
      if u have deleted the installation then u will have to install a new copy of windows.
      Note:- in both the cases u will lose the android installation

  56. I try to install android x86 4.4 on dell amd350, hoping that my little girl would be able to play her fav games without have to worry about charging
    What I've done was :
    1. Create partition using disk management , 5 gb and formatted it as ntfs.
    2. Create bootlabe usb flash disk using rufus
    3. Install the android..
    The android was succesfully installed, but most online games can not be played (restaurant story etc), it just kept stopping.
    I finally understand the cause, I suppose to format and install it on ext2 not ntfs.

    I reinstall it and the games play perfectly. But when I reboot the system I got error 17, none of the windows or the android can boot.
    I got the answer from here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWWQSYbHawE, but again...i keep led directly to windows, I can't boot to android, no option at all.

    Thank God I found this article http://logytips.blogspot.com/2013/07/how-to-dual-boot-windows-os-and-android.html?showComment=1426756478729#c277491796729971161,

    So I download grub2win, learn how to use it (see : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mPgbfcQYFI) and copy some script provided by above article, change the android version name, hardware and root (hd0,x) several times until find the right partition (mine is hd0,5) (see the red script)...and viola….done.

  67. Hello Zein I like to thank you I finally manage to install android-x86 on my HP touch smart tx2 with Windows 7 pro I like to share it for somebody that need this info. The only iso that works on this PC is android-x86-4.4-r1 I have tried almost all of them from 2.2-5.1 nothing else works. Most of the them no WIFI or touch. The only thing is there is no soft key but I install one from Google play. I used method 2 but I modify a little bit the grub CFG settings here is what I did:
    ### Android ###
    menuentry "Android-x86 4.4-r1" {
    set root='(hd0,2)'
    linux /android-4.4-r1/kernel quiet root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=tx2500 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode SRC=/android-4.4-r1 vga=788
    initrd /android-4.4-r1/initrd.img
    }
    ### END Android###
    again thank you it works perfect so far
    I can send some pictures if some one needs it but I do not know if I can post them here
